The College of Allied Health Professions

Together in Health:

Celebrating 50 Years of Allied Health at UNMC

Allied health professionals diagnose and treat patients, and they operate sophisticated medical equipment. These professionals make up an estimated 60% of the U.S. health care workforce.

UNMC has been educating allied health professionals since the early 1930s. In October 1972, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents officially created the School of Allied Health Professions.

Today, UNMC's College of Allied Health Professions offers 15 health profession education programs, two interprofessional master's degree programs, and four degree-advancement programs, with an average of annual enrollment of over 750 students.

College of Allied Health Professions 50th Anniversary Logo

This special logo was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the College of Allied Health Professions. The facets of the diamond gemstone symbolize the multiple and unique programs that collectively make up the "gem" that is the college.

Major Milestones of the College of Allied Health Professions

The Next 50 Years

The College of Allied Health Professions has the largest alumni group among all UNMC Colleges with over 16,500 alumni (including over 3,000 U.S. military graduates). This number will only grow as demand for allied health professionals increases in the years ahead. The college is on track to enroll over 1,000 students by 2028 to meet this workforce demand.

The college will expand its research enterprise in the areas of prevention and management of chronic disease and team science to improve health care delivery. Renovation of the Student Life Center clinical research laboratory will provide a much-needed campus resource and greatly facilitate this growth.

Approved in 2021, the new Respiratory Therapy program plans to enroll its first cohort of students in fall of 2024.

In 2022, the Nebraska State Legislature approved the expansion of UNMC on the Kearney campus, allowing the College of Allied Health Professions to further expand its programs.

As part of the Campus Master Plan, a fundraising campaign and capital construction review process are underway for a new health professions education building on the Omaha campus to house the College of Allied Health Professions.
