The Howe Medal from the American Ophthalmological Society is awarded for distinguished service to ophthalmology. Stan was the 79th recipient.

Stan was elected the 100th president of the American Ophthalmological Society. Founded in 1864, the society set ethical and scientific standards for the profession.

Stan attended a dinner at the Hilltop House, hosted by his patient, Warren Buffett. He, with nine other doctors, joined Buffett to form the Emdee Investment Group.

Stan married Ruth Haney on June 2 at the Dundee Presbyterian Church in Omaha. They had four children: William, Nancy, Stanley Jr., and Barbara.
